Chapter 2 Serenity sat in the boat with the other four girls, as Endymion paddled. It was such a beautiful day. She looked down at the rippling water swishing around the boat. He reflection looked back at her, shimmering in the afternoon light and wavering as they moved along. She saw something that she hadn't seen for awhile. Her smile. She sighed. She was going to miss everything dreadfully. But, it did feel so good to be down on earth, even if it was only for a day... She glanced up to see Endymion leaning forward and curbed a gasp of surprise. He leaned back again and she realized he'd only been maneuvering the oars. As he continued, she watched him. She felt a strong force coming from him... like a whirlwind trying to pull her in, and engulf her in its magic, it's torrent of whipping energy as it sped in every direction it could. There was a danger in that, she knew. A danger that she might slip and allow the magic to take her away. But she couldn't help thinking that he was indeed, very handsome. His dark blue eyes seemed to shine and sparkle. His sincere face that she doubted could tell a lie glowed with an inner light. His loving smile... ohh god, she was falling for him.... she knew it, and despaired because of it. Endymion glanced at the girl in front of him. She was deep in thought, it was obvious by the look on her face. She was very beautiful, sitting there in her white gown, looking into the water as though seeing something she never had before, and cherishing it. How could he get her to stay? She couldn't leave. Now he knew what "love at first sight" meant. And god it felt good. Just one look at her, made all his worries disappears. All his hopes and dreams come to life. She made him feel alive... bright. Like she was filling him with her light. He hoped that he wasn't dreaming, because although dreams were wonderful things, this would be so much better if it were real. A splash of water interrupted the two, waking them up from their thoughts, and shoving them back into reality. "Hey guys, you seemed so spaced out! I couldn't resist!" Raye said, laughing as she splashed them again. "Hey!" Endymion exclaimed, splashing her back with one of the paddles. The next 10 minutes were filled with water fights. Serenity didn't really participate. Her mind stayed on the moon and on the fact that she had to return to it soon.... to her home. "Sere, Sere, hey girl, where are 'ya?" Mina asked. Startled out of her thoughts again Sere looked around. They were on land already, yet she was still on the boat. "Ohh, sorry." She said with a nervous laugh, getting out the boat slowly. "Where'd you go off to, the moon?" Raye asked, rolling her eyes at the short blond. Serenity froze. "Wha... What did you... say?" Serenity asked, her eyes fearful, her whole body seeming to tremble as she looked at Raye, a fine edge in her voice that had never been there before. Raye jerked, startled at the intensity of her gaze. "Uh... nothing.. It's just.. an old expression. What's wrong?" She stared at Serenity in confusion as Serenity met her eyes and stared at her for a full minute as everyone looked at watched them in surprise. Then Serenity shifted her gaze and the tense lines that had stole upon her face eased. She smiled at Raye slightly and then said quietly, "Sorry, I thought you said something else." Raye just nodded, bewildered at Sere's strange behavior. "Come on people, lets go find a nice spot for a picnic." Amy exclaimed, breaking the tension that had seemed to pass over the group. Raye turned to her and smiled, and the six on them headed to a large cherry blossom tree. It was such a beautiful sight. The blossoms were at their peek of bloom and some of the drifted in the breeze; it was the picture of peace and beauty. They all sat and ate quietly, giggling and chuckling as they told stories of each others pasts to Serenity, who sat, enraptured, as though she had never heard of such things as they spoke of. She said nothing about her own past, to the girls' surprise, and the Endymion's dismay. He had been hoping to learn more about her, yet she seemed to determined to simply sit and listen, and she evaded any and all inquiries about herself with the ease of a cat, without ever being rude or forceful. As they continued to talk and laugh with pleasure, their joyous words could be heard a mile away, and Serenity was happy, for one of the first times in her life. "Hey guys, wanna go take a swim?" Lita asked suddenly, setting aside her drink. "Sure!" Amy, Mina, and Raye replied. They jumped up and headed for the lake. "You're not going?" Endymion asked Sere as she continued to stay seated and watched as the four sped off. "No, I don't want to. You go ahead, I'm gonna stay here." Sere said, moving her hair from the face, looking out at the pond curiously. She didn't know how to swim... she didn't want to find out. She didn't have time to, and it could be dangerous. "No, I think I'll stay with you." He said, sitting by Sere lightly, his arm momentarily brushing hers. She seemed startled at the offer, but then beamed a bright smile at him and he barely managed a smile back for the way his heart leapt. A small bunny jumped by from the foliage behind them. Sere opened her arms, and it jumped right into her lap, much to Endymion's surprise. He'd never seen a rabbit do that before... not a wild one anyway. She cuddled it and held it close, stroking its fur and crooning at it while it sat quietly in her lap, seeming to enjoy her touch. It was all white, with touches of pink on it's ears and nose. It was very cute, and it reminded Endymion strongly of the girl who held it.... "Here, wanna hold it?" Sere asked Endymion. She held out the bunny for him to hold and he took it from her arms slowly, brushing her hands as he did so. He held the furry little creature gently for a few minutes before he placed it down, and it jumped back into the bushes, but not without glancing at Sere one more time. "Serenity." Endymion began. "Sere, call me Sere." Sere insisted. "Sere," Endymion began again. "Do you really have to leave?" She looked away for a moment, then nodded her head sadly, never turning her head to meet his eyes. "Couldn't you stay for just one more day?" He asked. "I would, but I can't." She answered. Endymion looked at her. God, she couldn't leave, he thought. "Sere, here then, so you can remember me." He reached into his pocket and then gave her his star locket. The one that his mother had given him. The one that had been in the royal family for generations.... She took it slowly, as though never having received a gift before, and opened it to hear a wonderful melody. "I can't take it." She gave the locket back to him, even as her eyes sparkled at the beautiful song. "Yes you can." He gave it back, despite her protests. "Sere, just don't forget me. You are really something special." He leaned over and kissed her as she sat, staring at him in shock, clutching the locket so tightly it could break. Dear god, she was falling in love with him... and by the end of this day, she would never see him again. Whistles and applause made the two look up, Serenity quickly, Endymion easily. "So, I guess you guys are in item now?" Raye said. "In item?" Sere asked, having no clue what Raye meant. The four girls teased the two as Endymion laughed and put his arm around Sere, much to her discomfort.. and her pleasure. In the shadows, Beryl stood, full of jealousy and rage. He gave her his locket! She knew how much he loved that locket, how much it meant to both him and his family... and here he was, giving it to a girl he had known for less than a day! Ohh, how she despised that girl. She didn't care if she was a child, an angel, a queen, or even a water sprite, she was definitely going to get it. : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : As the group of six were laughing and joking about Enydmion and Serenity's kiss, four young men in gray uniforms walked along the shoreline from the direction of the village and stopped in front of them. "Endymion, Raye, we have finally found you." The one with long silver hair to his shoulders stated, and as he spoke the sun shone through the silver strands to make them appear as though they gleamed. His sharp silver eyes were filled with worry, and dawning relief. It appeared he was the head of this little group. "You are needed in the palace, the queen wants to talk to you two." Raye and Endymion looked at each other for a second; their faces filled with worry, the laughter dying. "Who are you?" Sere asked softly to the four. They turned curious gazes to her, and then smiled slowly. Her voice was smooth and friendly, her eyes bright and innocent. She looked like a lost child... and for some reason, all of them immediately warmed to her. "I'm Malachite. This is Jadeite, Zoycite, and Nephrite." Malachite pointed out the other three. Sere gave out a heart-warming smile, glad to meet these four... she sensed no hostility from them, but rather, a warm, caring aura of light that appeared to surround them all. Accompanying that, she also felt a great protectiveness emanating from them towards Endymion, although Raye and the others as well. But especially Endymion... there was something about them that made Serenity's guard go down, like it had with Endymion and the others. Some instinctive feeling that they meant her no harm... "I'm Serenity." She replied, coming out of her own private thoughts to introduce herself in turn. They smiled back at her again. For some reason, she lifted up their hearts, something that didn't happen often. "Sere, want to see the palace?" Endymion asked, as he stood up. She nodded. Endymion helped Serenity up and took her hand, making Serenity blush. The others looked at each other for a moment and let out a big grin, then turned to the four and paired off to walk together. Ami with Zoycite, Lita with Nephrite, Jadeite with Raye, and Malachite with Mina. All eight of them had some inexplicable soft spot for heir partners... it was just some gut feeling that things w ere meant to be this way. As they all walked off, Beryl put her plan into action. She walked out from her hiding place and purposely bumped into Serenity, making her fall down. Beryl let out a little grin, which she quickly hid as the girls startled face rose. "I'm so sorry." Beryl apologized without a hint of sincerity. She helped Serenity up. "It's alright." Serenity said, as she brushed the dirt off her dress. "No, I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking! Ohh, hello Endymion." Beryl let out another smile and her voice turned sickeningly sweet. She then grabbed his arm and yanked him away with her, babbling some nonsense about wanting to speak to him about their plans for later. Funny, but none of the girls or the four could remember Beryl mentioning anything about plans for her and Endymion later.... Endymion looked back at Serenity as Beryl pulled him further and further away. He wished Beryl would just say what she wanted and let him go so he could go back to her again. Wait a minute.... since when had he made plans with *Beryl* for today...? As Serenity watched, Endymion and Beryl stopped at the edge of the trees, near the water. For a moment the sun blocked her gaze as she squinted to get a better look, but when her vision cleared of the flash of light, she saw he was giving Beryl a long kiss. It broke her heart, and then some. Serenity's gaze was frozen as she watched Endymion and Beryl kiss. She felt cold.... cold, and very, very lonely. Even worse than she'd felt before she'd come here. She thought sadly feeling the moisture beginning to blur her vision. "I don't feel to well." Serenity said quietly, turning to the others, masking her hurt with a small, shaky smile that she just barely managed. "I should be going." With out another word, Serenity ran off, and as the others called after her, she disappeared around the corner, searching for somewhere where she could be alone with her pain, and her it misery. : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : Endymion yanked Beryl off of him. "Beryl, what in the world do you think you're doing?!" He exclaimed, shocked beyond measure, staring at her as though she'd just grown a pair of horns. Beryl plastered a grin across her face. "Nothing Endymion." She said innocently. Endymion let her go and shook his head at her in disbelief before he looked back to where he'd been standing with Serenity before. He couldn't find her anywhere. "Where's Sere?" Endymion asked Raye, coming back hurriedly, searching the area with his eyes even as he spoke. "She ran off." Raye answered, concern filling her eyes for both her brother and his newfound friend. She'd never seen him look so distressed, and Serenity had just run off without a single word as to where she was going, or if she was even coming back.... Beryl's grin grew wider. Endymion looked at Beryl with total disgust, and a measured amount of loathing before he ran off as well to look for Serenity. Beryl looked furiously in Endymion's direction as he disappeared around the corner. : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : Serenity's heart was shattering in her chest. This was far worse than when she'd sat above the Earth and longed to come here. At least then it had been only longing and loneliness. This feeling of heart-brake, and of betrayal was far, far worse.... Her eyes filled with involuntary tears. "What am I crying about, it's not like we are together... we could never be together. It's not possible... Ohh, Selene!!" Serenity cried out. She wished that she had never come down to Earth. Then she wouldn't have met Endymion, then she wouldn't be feeling so abandoned. So alone, and desperate.... Then she wouldn't have fallen for him, and she wouldn't have gotten her heart smashed... She should have known this wouldn't work out for her... for him... for them. She had thought he really cared. She had thought that maybe he liked her, even just a little, maybe he even cared about her more... the way she cared about him.. She had though perhaps he might have loved her, but no, he was a cold-hearted person that liked to play with people's feelings, and she had been wrong. For the first time in her life, she was beginning to believe that her first impression of Endymion may have been wrong. She had felt he was warm and friendly... now she wasn't sure. "Why is it that I can't hate him?" She asked out loud as the tears threatened to fall. Her heart throbbed with pain and confusion, bruising her ribs, cracking more as the pressure increased. She knew that she could never ever hate anyone, especially Endymion. It just wasn't in her nature. She cared about everyone... even those that were evil, and Endymion wasn't evil. Of that much, she was sure. She scrubbed her eyes hard and then looked at her reflection in the water. The same lake that she had looked into before but faraway from where she and the others had sat and ate their picnic... Looking into the crystal water, she saw a crying girl, her hopes, heart, and her dreams broken. But, she knew either way, it would have never be, would never *have* been... and that was some comfort at least. She would be back on the Moon by midnight, and she knew that anything that may have been between her and Endymion, even though there had been nothing, would have had to end then anyway... there would have been no use creating something that could never be. She supposed Endymion may have done her a favor. At least now she couldn't fall any further in love with him than she already was. Besides, she supposed she did miss Selene already...... Endymion looked at the serene woman sitting by the lake. He was totally in love with her, there was no use denying it now, and he knew he didn't want to. Not ever. He loved everything about her. Her eyes that could light up the darkest night with their sparkling depths and shining looks. Her smile that could make anyone and everyone's heart melt ... well almost everyone he thought, thinking of a cold-hearted person he'd left behind that obviously didn't know what "no" meant. He watched her closer and noted with a small blush that she also had a slender body that was hell not to touch. Her long golden hair glittered in the sunlight, as if each and every strand was made gold itself. And then, there was her enormous heart. Her willingness to help others and make other's happy. He just hoped that her heart was big enough to forgive him..... he didn't even know how he knew all this from only having met her and spent the day with her, but it was just something deep in his heart, his gut, his very *soul*.... that seemed to say "she's the one" and tell him everything he already knew by instinct to be true. "Serenity." A male voice spoke softly, startling the blond. She turned her head to see Endymion standing behind her, looking as nervous as she suddenly felt as he stepped forward, his fingers twitching, his face betraying nothing, but his eyes telling her things she couldn't possibly think about... Her own eyes were filled with hurt, and he saw it even as she tried to hide it. His heart broke when he glanced at her eyes. Damn, he'd never meant to hurt her. This was all Beryl's fault, the witch.... "Serenity, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you.. I mean I..." "Shhh." She put her finger on his lips to hush him and gently traced her finger along his lower lip. "I believe you." She replied quietly, and knew that even if it had meant something, she would have forgiven him. She would forgive him the world if only to hear him speak to her again. Her blue eyes shimmered with moisture, but this time the tears were of a different sort. He let out a sigh of relief. Endymion gave her a hug, which surprised Serenity. But she hugged him back with an intensity she'd never known before. Until she remembered that she had to leave by midnight..... Taking what little strength she had left, she lifted her hands and gently pushed him away. "Endymion, I'm sorry, but we can't be together." * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : Beryl smiled at the scene that played before her. Her heart gave a leap. (Usa-chan: I wasn't sure if she had a heart...) (Jade: She doesn't...) Beryl thought sinisterly, frowning and then smiling again. It was a smile of triumph. She though evilly, and with that, she left. * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : * : END OF CHAPTER 2 Goman Nasai for taking so long, someone ::indicating to Jade:: didn't write back to me upon the story, so I wrote the other half of it. So, if it is too short, which I think it is, e-mail Jade and complain. *Jade blinks innocently* Me? Now why on Earth would anyone want to do *that*....? 'Sides, I don't think it's *that* short... I think what I added in made it quite a bit longer. Ohh yeah, Jade, if you are reading this, where the hell are you?!!! Jade: I um... well.... uh... at home... *gulp* Hehe... yeah,at home. Ohh yeah, please e-mail me your comments, cause I have nothing else to do but write these notes that are so stupid . . . hurry, before my notes are as long as the story. Jade: They're gonna be if you don't shut-up..... (hehe)
