Title: Right Here Waiting Pen Name: Lelu E-mail Address: ETLCHSIEH@Aol.com Rating: PG Short Story -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, people. This is my 2nd fanfiction. The other one, Romancing in NY (which is, by the way, a Serena and Darien alternative universe love story), I'm still working on. I got the inspiration to do this song because since I can play the piano, I was playing it and I thought to myself, "Hey! This would be a really great theme for Serena and Darien!" Anyway, I'd like to thank the *few* people who are actually reading this before I send it. Chi Chi, co-author of Silver Lining. (GO READ IT!), Mandy, and Rachael. Thanks for all your help and support! If any of you actually read my other story, you'll notice that I put the latter 2 in it! Now, on with the show! (Unfortunately, that means Darien, too!) The song, 'Right Here Waiting' is written and sung by Richard Marx << denotes thought>> 'Right Here Waiting' 'Oceans apart, day after day, and I slowly go insane. I hear your voice, on the line, but it doesn't stop the pain.' ********************************************** "Darien," I quietly stated, "Why don't you love me anymore?" "I told you, Serena, it's over." "But Darien," I quietly pleaded, tears threatening to spill out of my eyes," I *still* love you." Darien's voice was bitingly hard, "Well, isn't that nice, Serena?," he said sarcastically, "Well, news flash! I don't love you." I looked into his eyes to see if these words were true. I shouldn't have. Instead of seeing the warmth that used to caress me when I went out, I only saw anger. <> I closed my eyes, blocking the tears out. When I opened them again, Darien gasped. Instead of the light blue color my eyes usually had, they had turned ice blue, much like Darien's. With my voice hard and steady, I quietly stated, "Fine, Darien. You can keep saying that to yourself, but just remember. I won't be single forever." With that, I turned on my heel and walked away, biting my lips so as Darien couldn't see the pain on my face. "Oh, Serena...I'm so sorry," he whispered, as a single, solitary tear rolled down his face, ************************************** 'If I see you next to never, how can we say forever? Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you.' ***************************************** As I walked home, I kept my eyes to the ground and repeatedly swiped at my face to clear the tears, but to no avail. My tears kept on blurring the sight of the ground, and I tripped once or twice, nearly falling to the ground. <> I thought, <> My thoughts and tears combined to make anguished noises in my throat. <> Serena, so caught up in her thoughts, tripped over a can in the middle of the sidewalk. Luckily, it was getting dark, and no one had seen her trip and fall. "Darien!" I screamed. "Why won't you come back to me? I love you, and I always will." Renewed tears started flowing down my face, and I gasped for air. "There will never be any other for me." I cried aloud. "I swear on the moon, you shall be the only one for me." ****************************************** 'I took for granted, all the times, that I thought would last somehow. I hear your laughter, I taste the tears, but I can't get near you now.' ******************************************* At the arcade, I sat solemnly, my eyes downcast, while the scouts and Rini sat next to and around me, their bubbly laughter and voices making me internally cringe. <> Raye, sitting closest to Serena, saw the tears starting to form in her eyes and noticed the small quivers on her lips. <> "Serena," Raye quietly whispered. "Would you like to go somewhere to talk?" I forced an extra perky smile onto my lips. <>, I thought, <> "Oh, no thanks, Raye!" I said, forcing laughter into my voice. "I'm fine!" "Are you sure Serena?" I could hear the worry in her voice. Now I had gotten agitated. <> "I SAID that I WAS FINE! Why won't you PEOPLE just LEAVE me ALONE," I screamed at the top of my lungs. "JUST because Darien DUMPED ME, you're ALL over me!" Every conversation in the arcade stopped and all heads turned toward me. I looked sheepishly to the ground. "Serena, don't you know that you can never fool a close friend?" With those few words, reality struck me. Why should I be moping around when I have the best friends in the world? They'd give up their lives for me, which they had done quite a few times already, and they'd give anything to see me smile. The conversation had died down long ago, and all eyes were on me. "You know what, girls?", I said slowly. "I'm not going to let Darien get me down. If he has a new girlfriend, so be it. I'm not going to let him rule my life." The next sentence, I spoke with genuine happiness. "Let's go to the mall, scouts." (AN: Rini already knows about Serena and the rest of the girls being the Sailor Scouts.) "All right!" All the girls, except for me, shouted. They then proceeded to jump up and down. "A shopping adventure at the mall." They suddenly quieted down when they noticed everyone in the arcade staring at them. I suddenly shrank about 5 or 6 inches. "I don't know them," I quietly murmured. As we left the arcade, I had a feeling that someone was staring at me. I quickly spun around and looked right into the eyes of...Darien. "Girls, why don't you go ahead without me. I'm going to have a little...confrontation with our 'hero.'" **************************************** 'Oh can't you see it, baby. You've got me going crazy. Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you.' ***************************************** <> With that last thought, I quickly spun around on my stool and stared fixedly at my drink. As I was 'looking' at the 'fascinating' designs on the table, a shadow blocked any further light. Angered, because of what had just happened, I turned around, ready to take my anger out on the poor soul who was standing behind me. I didn't even get a chance. Big, blue, beautiful eyes were in front of me, glimmering with unshed tears. I tried to make my voice steady and sarcastic, "What do *you* want?" Unfortunately, my voice wavered a bit. No one, but Serena, would have caught onto that. Without any words, any warning, she stepped closer to me. I could feel her warm breath on my face, her body heat. "Oh, Darien", she whimpered, "Why won't you just tell me what's going on? What's making you hate me so?" I got up, trying to re-organize my now scattered brains. Her close proximity was making my head spin. "Serena, I told you. It's over. I don't love you anymore." She took another step closer to me. "Then why," she said, tilting her head to one side," can't I believe you?" With those last few words, she stepped closer to me, and closed the distance between our two bodies. Without any warning, she stepped onto her toes, and pushed her mouth onto mine. ******************************************** 'I wonder how we can survive, this romance. But in the end if I'm with you, I'll take the chance.' ******************************************** Without any warning, I pushed my mouth onto his.The kiss was suprsingly sweet. After our lips had met, I could feel no resistance from him. In fact, it was he who had opened my lips with his tongue and started to play with mine. My eyes flew open to meet.... happiness in his?! All reasonability in my mind screamed <> I started to pull back, a blush already covering my face, but his arms went around me and trapped me.And so the kiss continued. After we had pulled back, due to lack of oxygen, Darien looked like he had something to say to me. ********************************************* 'Wherever you go, whatever you do, I will be right here waiting for you. Whatever it takes, or how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you.' ********************************************* "Serena," I said, trying to make my voice as gentle as possible, "Why don't we go somewhere and talk?" She nodded her head, and plastered a small smile on her face. That didn't fool me though. One look into her eyes said it all. <> I thought. <> We walked in silence to the park. When we had reached the park, it was deserted, except for a few people scattered here and there. The sun was setting and the light was glimmering on the pond. <> "Serena," I said gently, trying to shake her out of her reverie. "Hmmnn? What, Muffin?" At the last word, she colored gently, quickly remembering that I no longer loved her. "I...I'm sorry, Darien." She stammered out. "It's just that this setting is...really getting to me...And...this *is, * wait, *was* our bench, when we were...when...when we were..."She couldn't bring herself to say it. It brought back too many memories that she had tried repeatedly to block out. Flashbacks came to her. Serena, sitting on her windowsill, glancing up at the moon. Darien's look of disgust and anger. Her yelling at her friends. She suddenly glanced up and into Darien's eyes. <> she wondered. <> "Darien, I think that I had best go." She stood up to leave, but was unable to by a hand being clamped down onto her arm, forcing her to sit down again. "Serena, " I said, "I think that I should tell you the truth about why I broke up with you." I then proceeded to go into a long description of my dreams. Us getting married, Serena crying, and finally, her being killed. The voice warned me to stay away. By the time this story was over, Serena had tears freely falling from her eyes. "Serena. Don't cry...It really does hurt me to see you crying." "But Darien, why didn't you tell me? It hurts....Not that fact that you broke up with me, but that fact that you didn't trust me enough to tell me." "Oh, Serena. I didn't want you involved in this. It had nothing to do with you." Complete fury ran through Serena's body. She jumped off the bench and stood right in front of Darien, her eyes, which had turned ice blue again, flashing. "Where the hell do you come off, thinking that you have the right to say that? It had *nothing* to do with me? Excuse me, Darien, but if I remember correctly, it's me dying, not you! You should've told me, Darien." Her voice broke down to a whisper. "You should have told me." Defeated, she sat back down onto the bench, sobs racking her body. A warm arm made itself around her shoulder, and a warm hand intertwined through her's. She softly shook them off, but he was persistent. "Look, Serena," he said calmly. "I can understand what you're going through-" "How could you say that? Your love of a thousand years just didn't go and dump you, with out a reason. You didn't spend countless nights, crying, hoping that your love would come back to you." Her voice was accusing, and rightfully so. "Oh, but you're wrong. I had to go through the pain of watching you break down, every time I claimed that I didn't-" Her voice was now full of hope. "Claimed?" Darien was startled, being shaken out of his emotional speech. "Yes, Serena, claimed." Her eyes were now shining and full of hope. She spoke, slowly and hesitantly, "So...so...y-you still...love me?" She lifted her eyes up to meet his. Blue meeting blue. "Yes." Just one word made Serena's spirit soar. She flung herself into Darien's awaiting arms. "Oh, Darien," she sobbed, "I've missed you so." Darien soothed Serena by stroking her hair and her back. "Don't worry, Serena. I'll never do anything as stupid as that ever again." As he said this, a few tears slipped out of his own eyes as well. Sky blue eyes met sapphire blue. "Promise me, Darien," she whispered. "Promise me that you'll never leave me." "I promise." He lifted her chin and looked into her shining eyes. Shining full of hope, love, and a promise of a great future. ******************************************* Okay, what did you think? Too sappy? Too stupid? Just plain too too?
