AN: Okay. I know that I haven't finished 'Romancing in NY' yet, but I will! I promise. This story has absolutely *nothing* to do with my other ones. It is, like always, set in an alternate reality world. This is roughly based on something I had written for an assignment about a year ago. I've revised and edited things, so this story would be a little more 'grown up.' Original character names have been changed to different ones, to make the plot seem more Sailor Moon related. It's a 3 parter, because stupid 'Notepad' won't let me do it any other way. You would not believe how mad I am right now. I *really* feel like swearing, because of this damn progrmam. GRRRRR! (However, I'm willing to buy Darien for all he's worth!) Rated: PG To Protect a Princess England has always had its fair share of catastrophes. From plotting relatives, to 'incidental' deaths, there has always been a way to get rid of a family member that is not needed. One story, however, fascinates us all, and I am here to tell it...Just sit back, relax, and let my words drift upon you... Her name was Serenity. (AN: I don't have last names made up, so just bare with me! ::winces:: Sorry!) Her parents had planned to have a boy, that way he would inherit the kingdom and the castle, when he was of age. Her parents had also hoped that he would grow-up to be responsible and wise, for their land, England, though it was small, would need a great, but gentle, ruler. Their plans, however, were altered. After Serenity had been born, the King and Queen had found out that the Queen could bare no more children. The Queen was a tiny person, her waist quite narrow. She had almost died when Serenity was born, but the doctors were able to save her. But, if she were to try to have another baby, she would, the doctors declared, die. Sadly, the King and Queen were killed during the raid of the castle, thereby leaving Serenity, who was the single heir to the throne, to inherit everything. Serenity and her nurse, Ilene, were the only two people who were uninjured during the raid. The bandits had sneaked in by way of the back door in the middle of the night. The King and Queen had been in their resting chambers, but Serenity, who was still quite young, the tender age of 8, was out in the gardens with her nurse, for she could not fall asleep. Ilene and Serenity had heard the terrible screams as the King and Queen were being slain, and quickly hid underneath the trees. The bandits were soon caught and killed by the royal guards, so Ilene and Serena came out of hiding. Serenity was now the only heir to the throne. However, since she was so young, she was not yet fit to rule, because, by royal decree, you must be at least 18 before you may take your 'rightful position.' So, Serenity's uncle, Jedite, took over the throne with his wife, Beryl, at his side. Now you see, Jedite was a kind man, the type that was fit to be king. His wife, however, was a terrible, terrible woman. She was wicked. Some said that she was into the devil's doings, but were never able to prove this. When her husband ascended the throne, it was like she, instead, had taken over. The once fair country had turned dark and desolate, for she had taken away land and kept the extra money for herself. The servants in the palace hated her for it, and swore to take revenge in one way or another... ****10 years later**** For the past 9 years, Serenity had grown up as a fairly happy child. She was blossoming into a beauty. Her 18th birthday, however, was coming up, and Bery l was starting to worry. She wanted to keep the throne for herself and get rid of 'the brat', as she called her. Serenity, however, was oblivious to these plans, for she was too pure to even imagine ideas like that. She had grown up to be a beautiful princess, what one would call an 'English Rose'. Her hair was the purest gold of colors, and felt like silk. When she would turn her head, and the sunlight caught her hair just right, people would gasp in awe of her beauty. Her eyes were the color of the ocean, and it held no secrets, baring her soul to any one who looked into her eyes. Her figure was trim and slim, curves in just the right places. Men everywhere lusted for her, each believing they, somehow, would win her hand. Serenity, again, was oblivious to this, too involved in making herself and her servants, whom she affectionately called her friends, happy. Beryl was jealous. Jealous of everything that Serenity had. She wanted to get rid of the princess. She locked herself into her room and slaved away, flipping through her books and plotting in her head, until she came up with a fool proof plan. Beryl grinned. She would send Serenity to Spain for her 18th birthday, accompanied by only one person, her nurse, Ilene. Beryl had already sent a message to the killer, telling her that she wanted it done quickly and quietly. Beryl's twisted smile grew larger, until it spread across her whole face. After the deed had been done, she would then kill her husband, and take the throne for herself... ****Beryl's chambers**** As one maid, Molly, a red-haired, brown-eyed 'wench', as Beryl had publicly declared her, was cleaning Beryl's room, she noticed a sheet of paper sticking out of a drawer. At first, she held no curiosity, knowing that if Beryl was to come in and discover her reading something that did not belong to her, she would, do doubt, kill her. She began to dust the room, and slowly made her way over to the drawer, which held the sheet of paper. As she began to tuck the paper into the drawer, she noticed something at the top, written in blood red. Molly smirked. <> She picked up the sheet of paper and glanced behind her shoulder, making sure that no one else was around. After reading the first few lines, she gasped. She then heard footsteps, that of a person wearing high heels, which only royal persons could wear. Molly quickly stuffed the paper down the front of her shirt and began to dust again. Beryl walked into the room. "Still not done, servant girl?" "I'm almost done, my lady," Molly replied, keeping her eyes down, as a sign of respect. <> "Well," Beryl said impatiently, "hurry up. I have no time for idiots like you. I've already wasted 5 seconds talking to a whore, " Molly clenched her teeth, for Beryl knew that she was a virgin, "like you." With that, Beryl turned and left, but not before hearing Molly's comment. "I hope you die." She spun on her heel and marched straight back into the room. CRACK! (AN: Yet another one of my pitiful imitations of something happening.) Molly held her cheek, for Beryl had just smacked. "Speak to me again in that way, " Beryl snarled, "and I'll have you killed. You can count on it." She walked out of the room, leaving Molly, who had bravely kept back her scream of pain and tears, standing alone, in the middle of the room. ****Serenity's chamber**** Serenity sat in front of her mirror, brushing her hair. <<998, 999, 1000. There. I'm finished.>> She gently set her brush down and sighed. <> she thought. <> How wrong her innocent mind was. Beryl's true reason of not letting her roam the streets of her kingdom, as she rightfully should, was because she did not want Serenity to hear the terrible things that was leaving the mouths from the peasants about Beryl, and to see the horrible things that had happened to the people's land while Jedite, who was being manipulated by her, was on the throne. All thoughts flew out of her mind, as the door to her bedroom was flung open. She spun around and saw Molly, her cheek still red from her other Beryl's slap, grasping a sheet of paper in her hand. "Molly, you mustn't do that! If Beryl had heard, she would've yelled at you! You know that she doesn't like very loud noises!" Molly didn't bother to drop her eyes. Serenity had a rule for all her servants. 'You mustn't need to avoid my eyes when you're speaking to me. I wish to treat you all like equals, although, "she added with a small giggle, "you are paid to take care of me.' Just because Serenity had made this rule though, it did not mean that the servants held to respect for her. They only obeyed her wish because they loved her, and wanted her to feel at ease when conversing with them. Molly and the rest of the servants, however, still bent their heads when Beryl was around, so Serenity would not be punished for telling them otherwise. "Mistress, I have come upon a matter that disturbs me greatly." All humor dropped from Serenity's face. "Molly, what is wrong?" Molly handed the paper to Serenity. "*This* is what's the matter." Serenity good- naturedly took the paper, and began to read it aloud. "Plans to kill the Princess." Her face paled considerably as she silently read over the plans. Serenity did the only thing that any person would do if they had discovered their own death plan. She fainted. ****10 minutes later**** Serenity's eyes fluttered open, revealing the 2 people who meant the most to her in the world: Ilene and Molly. Her eyes, which were clouded in confusion, suddenly cleared. She moaned and put a hand to her head. "Please tell me that was a joke," she murmured, knowing very well that it wasn't. Molly, who was also in great distress, for Serenity was one of her only friends, dropped her eyes in habit. "I'm sorry, Mistress," she whispered, "but it wasn't." Serenity's eyes began to fill with tears. "Oh," she said, in her soft-spoken voice, "how could she do this to me? I trusted her..." She broke off, and her anguished sobs were heard throughout hallways. Molly quickly sprang up and shut the door. "Mistress, you mustn't let Beryl see you like this, or she'll know that you have found out. All evidence will turn to me and," Molly spun around, so she could face Serenity, "she'll kill me," she whispered. "I know she will. She already said today that she would." Serenity gasped. "Yes, I know that it sounds harsh, but it's true. Did you not see the red mark on my cheek when I first came in?" Serenity nodded her head. "That was from Beryl. She heard me say a remark directed towards her, and she slapped me." Serenity gasped. "Then she threatened to kill me if she ever heard anything disrespectful come out of my mouth again. I beseech you, Princess. Stop crying. Don't let *her* see you like this, or she'll know!" Serenity's sobs subsided. She nodded her head. "You are right, friend. I never knew that one could be so malicious (AN: RR, then she doesn't know about us then, does she?) toward another. I mustn't let her suspect anything." Her mind began to whirl. She needed to think of a plan so she, and her 2 friends, would be saved. She calmly spoke. "We shall go to Spain, as planned-" "Your highness," Ilene protested, "we can't! She'll kill you for sure!" "Ilene," Serenity said, "you didn't hear the rest of my plan. Please, will you listen?" "Anything for you, Highness." "As I said, we shall go to Spain, so Beryl doesn't suspect anything. However, there shall be a twist to this plan. Molly, didn't you once tell me that you had served the Prince of Spain and his family at one time?" "Yes, Mistress, but that was some time ago...I really didn't even serve him. We were more like...companions. Sort of like how you and I are, now." Serenity hurriedly said, "Molly, I need you to contact he and his family. Tell them, but no one else, of Beryl's plans. See if they will help us. You, of course, will also come to Spain, so that...that..." she could not even think of a word to describe her, " horrid witch will not...take your life, as she intends to." Molly curtsied. "I shall go now, and try to contact them. The quicker I reach them, the better. Excuse me, Mistress." Molly quickly ran out of the room, leaving Ilene and Serenity to talk. "Ilene," Serenity began, "how does our country fare?" Ilene's eyes became downcast. "Highness, things are not going well. Ever since your uncle took over, everything has gone downhill. Our once fair and prosperous land has turned into nothing, all because of, "she spat this next word, "Beryl. It is like she, herself, is the ruler. I firmly believe that as soon as she believes that you are out of the way, she will try to kill her husband." Serenity's eyes were filled with horror. "How can one person," she whispered, "be so full of hate? Why on earth would she want to do this to us, her family?" "Some people, highness, are just that way. Greed overtakes them, until they can think of nothing but themselves. It really is a pity, Serenity. I heard that when Beryl was younger, she was beautiful and loving, just like you. Suddenly, she changed. No one knows why...Some say that it is because she had joined the devil in his works, but don't you ever let her hear you say that. She would kill you, not that it would matter since she's already planning your demise, in an instant." Serenity shuddered. "Oh my..." she trailed off, not knowing what to say. Ilene's arms embraced her into a hug. "There, there," she said to the Princess, trying to comfort her, "cry it all out, dear." "Oh, Ilene," Serenity sobbed, "what would I do without you? You've always been there...Like a surrogate mother, and yet...you have received nothing for everything that you have contributed to me." "Princess, serving you is enough," Ilene said sincerely. Serenity's eyes burned with fire and she jumped up to her feet. "No, Ilene. You and the others have been mistreated for too long. I *have* noticed this, though many may think that I haven't. This has gone on long enough. I shall speak to Beryl immediately." Ilene's eyes flew open. "No, highness," she cried. "You can't! You mustn't! I won't let you! Please, think rationally. If you were to go to her in this state, she'd kill you now! Please, wait until you have ascended the throne, and then you may change things to your pleasing. Please, I beg of you. Don't do this." Serenity sank to the floor. "Yes, Ilene," she whimpered, "I suppose that you are right...You're always right. Thank y-" Before she could finish her sentence, the room to her door burst open. "Serenity, *darling*," Beryl gushed, "I've been looking *all* over for you! I've a surprise for you dear." Then, to Ilene, she snarled, "Get out, you low life. I must speak to the Princess alone." Serenity felt anger course through her body, and was about to say something, when she remembered her promise. She would change things after. She gave a sad look to Ilene, who nodded back in understanding. "Yes, Beryl." She turned and scurried out of the room. "Now, Serenity, *dearest to my heart*, where were we? Ah, yes!" Beryl began to pace the room, as Serenity took a seat on a chair, knowing what Beryl was about to say. "As you know, you're 18th birthday is coming up. And I've- I mean... your Uncle Jedite and I...have decided to send you to...Spain!" Beryl stopped pacing and waited for the Princess' reaction. Luckily , Serenity was quite the actress, when needed to be. Serenity jumped off the bed and squealed. "Really? You're really allowing me to go to Spain? Oh, Auntie! You have no *idea* what this means to me!" She ran across the room and gave Beryl, who cringed, a hug. "Oh, Auntie. You really do spoil me. When do I leave?" Beryl gave a self-righteous smile. "In 5 days, dearest," she said, grinning, for in 6 days times, Serenity would be no more. "*5* days? Only 5? However am I going to pack in time?" Serenity was actually secretly rejoicing, for she knew that in 5 days time, Molly would have been able to reach the royal family in time. "Auntie, you really are too good to me. Now, please, don't mistake me to be rude, but who I am going to take along?" Beryl grinned. <> "Well, darling, of *course* you may bring your nurse. I wouldn't even *dream* of letting you go by yourself!" Serenity pretended to ponder her answer, whilst she was thinking, <> "Thank you, Auntie, but I was wondering if I could..." She pretended to hesitate. "I was wondering if I could bring that servant girl, Molly, along with me. I'm afraid that Nurse is getting rather old, and I'd like to bring along someone who can serve me quickly." Beryl frowned, but quickly replaced it with a malicious smile. <> "But of course, dear," she said sweetly. "Who am I to deny you any of your wishes? After all, you are the Crown Princess," <> she added silently. Serenity smiled, revealing 2 rows of perfect white teeth. "Oh, thank you," she said breathlessly. "Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to start packing." Serenity grinned. "You can't bring too many clothes, can you?" "Of course, not, dearest." Beryl smiled saccharinely. "I'll just leave. Have fun, dear!" "But, Auntie, will you not see me off when I leave?" "I'm sorry dear, but..." <> "but...there are important matters at hand. We are worried that...that....that....THE COWS ARE ATTACKING!" She blurted out. Serenity sweatdropped. <> However, on the outside, Serenity kept a cool manner, with only concern showing on her face. "The cows are attacking?" she questioned. "I see...Well, then, good luck with trying to keep the cows away," she said breezily. This time, *Beryl* sweatdropped. <> How wrong those words were. Serenity was actually considered one of the smartest persons in the land. She had shown, ever since she was a child, remarkable intelligence, and had learned many different languages, all of which she could speak quite fluently. Her math skills were immeasurable to any, man or woman. "Well, Beryl, shouldn't you be off then? To...attend to the cow matter?" she questioned, rather sarcastically. "Um, yes, dear. Well, I shall see you after you come back from Spain, dearest. Have some fun, and try not to spend *too* much money," she said, sarcastically. "Ta-ta!" Serenity rolled her eyes as soon as her aunt walked out of the room. <> She then turned around and walked to her closet. <> ****4 Days Later**** Serenity shut her trunk. "Well," she said briskly to Molly, "I think that's it! I'm ready to go. Have you received a reply from *you-know-who* yet?" Molly grinned. "Yes, mistress. The royal family would be more than grateful to help you. They, along with the rest of the royal families, have noticed what was going on, and figured that *she*," Molly spat out her name in disgust, "would try to plan something like this. They support you, Mistress. They will help you." Serena ran across the room and enveloped her friend in a hug. "Thank you, Molly. I don't know how I shall ever repay you." Molly's eyes filled with tears. "Mistress, you do know that whilst you are away, Beryl will..." she stopped, but then bravely continued, "Beryl will try to kill me!" Serenity pushed her friend back and gave a great smile. Molly's eyes misted with confusion. "Mistress, you seem joyful at this news..." Serenity, realizing what Molly felt, erased the grin from her face, but it slowly made its way back out again. "Molly, how could you ever doubt me? I have arranged it so that you will come to Spain with me, too!" Molly's eyes widened. "Really, Mistress? You are too kind! I would never doubt you...You know that." Serenity's gaze wavered for just one moment. "Lately, Molly, I don't know who to trust..." ****(The Next Day) At the docks of Spain**** Molly stood on her tippy-toes, trying to look for her dark-headed friend of long ago. "Serenity, I don't know where he is! He told me that he, himself, would meet us personally, without any escorts. I can't find him!" Serenity shook her head. "Molly," she said softly, "be patient. We are grateful to his family for protecting us." "Yes, Mistress, I know, but ever since Endymion was young, he was always like-" "Like what," another voice, which was quite deep, interrupted. Molly flushed in anger and spun around. "Excuse me, sir, but I don't-" She broke off. In a small whisper, "Endymion?" The dark, blue eyes had given it away. He nodded his head to affirm it. Molly flung herself into his arms. "Endymion! Oh, it is *so* good to see you again!" She squeezed her arms even tighter. "Molly," he wheezed, "I can't breathe!" Molly ignored him. The wheels in her mind were turning. <> She suddenly detached herself from him. Endymion took a couple deep breaths of air, and then ruffled Molly's hair as a sign of affection. "You still haven't changed, have you," he asked teasingly. Molly grinned and punched him not-too-gently in the shoulder. "Nope!" Serenity had witnessed this whole scene, and had turned her head away. She felt something in her stomach, and this feeling, which she did not like at *all* was making it's way to her heart. She had felt faint when she first saw him, though he still had not noticed her. She chided herself. <> She gave a grim smile. <> Then, she noticed his eyes. They were a shockingly colored blue. <> Molly's voice broke into her thoughts. "Serenity," she called questioningly, worried about her distant look. She shook her gently by the shoulders, until her eyes came back into focus. When she did, she saw 2 concerned faces, and one mocking, though with a hint a concern. "Mistress, I'd like you to meet Endymion. He's the Crown Prince of Spain." With that, Molly stood back and watched. Endymion, though he would never admit it, had noticed the shocking beauty when he had first spotted Serenity. It was her eyes, at first, which had captivated him. Though they had not made eye contact, he had seen them and her soul within. Pure and untainted, just like she. Blond hair spilled over the hood of her forest green cloak, which she clutched uncertainly about her. Pale, ivory skin, with no flaws, and beautiful, red lips...Ah, yes. Her lips. <> he had though, before turning his attention to his friend from so long ago. However, Serenity had now made her presence known, by giving a low curtsy before him. Though she did not know it, all the mocking that was once in his eyes flew out. Looks of...concern and duty replaced it, and joy quickly flashed by, too. <> Molly pondered. <> Serenity rose from her curtsey and looked at Endymion. Serenity said, her voice tinkling like silver bells, to Endymion, "Sir, I thank you for taking us in. We may not ever be able to repay you for this kind deed that you have given to us. I know that England and Spain might not be on the best of terms, but I can assure you, highness, that after I have found a suitable husband," Endymion's eyes darkened, "that we shall do all in out power to make an alliance with you." Endymion took her outstretched hand and kissed it charmingly. He, too, gave a bow, and looked her in the eye. "Princess, we thank you for giving us this...opportunity to protect you. Yes, I know that our countries are not on good terms, but I, too," he added the next part for a sort of revenge, though the princess had not known what she had spoken would affect him, "shall find a suitable wife and we shall also try our best to make an alliance with your country." Serenity had turned her head away when she heard the last part, though she did not know why. Bravely, she turned her head to meet his cool gaze. "Thank you, sir," she said, her voice unwavering. "I'm glad to know that we may be able to depend on each other," she said sarcastically, "when one is in great need of something." She removed her hand from his grasp and said, "Now, where are we staying? I, along with my 2 friends, am famished. You must know of someplace we can eat," she said, in a challenging type of voice. Endymion grimaced. She was accusing him of not knowing his own country! <> Luckily, his thoughts were cut off, as Molly, seeing what he was thinking, interrupted and said, "Endy! Is that quaint little restaurant by the ocean, the one we used to go to when we were younger, still around?" Endymion caught onto his thoughts and blushed gently. He knew that Molly had some how found out about what he was thinking. He gave Molly a shamed looked, and saw that her eyes were sparkling. < he groaned. <<*What* is she thinking about now? >> He felt a pressure at his side, and noticed that Serenity had gently nudged his shoulder. Feeling agitated, he snapped at her and said, "What do you want?" He immediately regretted his actions. Her eyes began to fill with tears, for she was quite sensitive to what others said and thought of her. She turned her head away and said, her voice wavering, "I...I only wanted to remind you that...that...Molly asked you something." He gently put both of his hands on her shoulder, and turned her so she would be facing him. "Serenity," he said, as if he were apologizing to a child, "I'm sorry for snapping at you. My mind has been on...other things. Please accept my humble apologies. I truly didn't mean to insult you." She looked into his eyes, and saw nothing but honesty. "I forgive you," she said meekly. "Just," she added in a teasing tone, "don't do it again or I'll, "she said, in a royal tone, "have your head cut off by royal decree." She gave him a tentative smile, and noticed that he was beaming at her. Endymion took her hand once more and kissed the back of it, and enjoyed watching her blush. "Well, fair lady, shall we leave? I believe that someone stated that they were hungry a while back." Endymion bent down and picked up the cases, and loaded it onto the back of his awaiting carriage. oduced to. "I should hope so," Endymion sarcastically replied. "With all the food that you ate, a supposed *proper* British lady , it could feed my entire army!" Serena poked him in the ribs. "Hey, you ate just as much as I did!" "Yeah, but I'm a guy." Molly and Ilene had already walked into the magnificent castle, leaving Endymion to show Serenity his prided garden. Since they had complete privacy, they could behave as a plebian, (AN: RR, MM...SP Vocab!) if they desired to. And they did. "Why," Serenity sputtered, "that is the most chauvinistic thing I've ever heard of!" Endymion gave her a charming grin. "Thank you for the compliment." Serenity mock glared at him. "It wasn't supposed to be a..." She trailed off when she noticed the grin spreading wider on his face. "Endymion..." "Serenity..." he mocked her tone of voice. "Endymion, I do believe that you are trying to get me mad at you!" He nodded an affirmative. "Well," she huffed, "it's not going to work!" His grin grew into a smile. "And wipe that smile off your face, Endy, beca-" "Endy?" he questioned. Serenity blushed. "Well," she said, trying to think of an excuse, "it's just that your name is so long, and-" "And Serenity isn't?" he inquired. Serenity colored again. "Well," she said, her voice a mere whisper, "if you don't want me to call you that-" "Oh, no," Endymion interjected. "It's fine...As long as," he added, his eyes sparkling with mischief, "you let *me* call *you* Sere." Serenity gave a silvery laugh. "Sere..." she trailed off, going into deep thought. "Yes, I suppose that that would be alright. However, in the presence of others, you may not, "she said, her eyes flashing towards him, "call me that. People will wonder." "Wonder what?" Endymion questioned, batting his eyelashes innocently. "Oh, stop it, Endy. You look like a complete idiot doing that." "Well, *Sere*, "using her name with force, "I shall call you whatever I like, whenever I like, and that's final," he declared. "Oh, you...you..." Serena said explosively. "You, what?" "Oh, forget it, Endy. You're just too complicated for words!" With that, she stormed back into the castle, his ridiculing laughter ringing in her ears. After she had walked into the castle, Endymion was still staring at the path. "Well," he murmured, "she is *definitely* something special...There's something about her that I can't quite place." He shook his head. "Oh, well. Like the old saying goes, 'All girls are puzzles, waiting for the right pieces to make them complete.' (AN: Okay, I just made that up...If anyone knows a better proverb, feel free to tell me!) With that, he too walked into the castle, still pondering his 'feelings' for Serenity. ****Dinnertime**** "King Phileppe, (AN: MM, I'm internally wincing at this!) Queen Isabella, I'd like to thank you again for taking me in," Serenity said politely. "You honestly don't know how much this means to me, and-" "Sere," Endymion interjected, "What about me?" Serenity glared at Endymion while the King and Queen of Spain watched amusedly. One thought ran through both of their minds. <> "Endymion," Serena spoke quietly, "I thought that I told you not to call me that while we were in the presence of others." "But, Sere, they are just my parents!" Serenity retorted, "Yes, but they are 'just' the King and Queen of Spain, who happen to have my life in their hands!" The Queen opened her mouth, and played along with Endymion. "Oh, Serenity, you mustn't bother with formalities around here. He may call you that if he so chooses, while in the presence of others." Endymion glanced at Serenity, who seemed ready to yell. She quickly, and effectively, hid this, though, and calmly asked to be excused. "Your highnesses, I'm sorry, but I'd like to walk in the gardens once more before I turn in. If you'll excuse me?" It was more of a declaration, rather than a question. "Of course, dear, " the Queen replied. "Stay out for as long as you like." "Thank you." Serenity rose, curtsied, and walked out of the room. "My, my," the King said, "She does have a temper...and a mind of her own. I like a girl who has those qualities." The King threw a meaningful glance at Endymion, who was still staring after Serenity. He suddenly noticed that both his parents were looking at him quizzically, waiting for an answer. Endymion jumped to his feet, the napkin falling to the floor. "WHAT?" he yelled, not caring about anyone who heard. "You actually like her? That spoiled brat?" He then quieted down. "Well, she is quite beautiful, but that temper of hers...It's intolerable." He, too, walked out of the room and towards the garden, his favorite thinking spot. However, Endymion had forgotten one thing. A certain princess was also in the gardens....The King and Queen looked at each other. "Ahh," she sighed, "Young love..." The King gave a childish grin. "They might not know it yet, but something is definitely brewing between the two...I can feel it... in words, gestures... Just about anything gives it away. I say that we just sit back and watch it unfold. What do you think, my dear?" The Queen laughed. "Of course. However, if things do need a little push, I'll be sure to give it one." ****In the Gardens**** Serenity cursed. Again and again. How unfamiliar these words were to her, but she nonetheless spoke and thought them. "Damn that Endymion," she muttered. 'Damn him to hell.' So caught up in her thoughts, she did not hear the footsteps behind her, until it was too late. An arm made its' way about her shoulder, causing her to gasp. She turned around, her eyes meeting that of a stormy blue. "Endymion! What do you think you're doing?" Suddenly, her mind clicked into gear. She tore his arm off her shoulder, much to his amusement. "Endymion," she cried, "How could you do that to me? In front of the King and Queen?" Endymion's face lost its sardonic look, and was quickly replaced by that of concern. Serenity sat down on the bench, and put her head into her hands. "Endy...mion," she moaned. "How could you? Now your parents probably think that I'm a ninny..." She trailed off, hoping to hear him argue with her. When he did not speak, she looked up and gasped... As Serenity was in the garden, Endymion had been walking towards the center, where, though he did not know, Serenity was. He was shaken out of his thoughts by some soft muttering. As he walked close, he noticed some vile words. <> His thoughts trailed off as he saw the beautiful profile of Serenity. The moonlight seemed to beckon him to her. Her golden hair was illuminated by it, and her eyes full of unshed tears. She was pacing back and forth, walking agilely and gracefully, not noticing him. Suddenly, she stopped, and stood still, as if pensively thinking. He took this opportunity to walk up to her and put an arm around her shoulder. Her shoulder immediately stiffened, and she turned her flashing blue eyes to look at him. Once she had seen who it was, she had quite abruptly shrugged his arm off, and had cried, "Endy...mion," he secretly grinned, knowing that she would've called him by his nickname, had she not been mad at him, ". "How could you? Now your parents probably think that I'm a ninny..." The grin slipped off his face. <> He had meant to tell her so, but she had covered her face with her hands. His eyes were full of concern. <> His thoughts halted. <> She looked up at him, and gasped. "Endymion," she said shakily, "What's wrong? You look ill." He focused on the beauty in front of him. "Nothing, Sere," he lied, hoping that she would believe him. She did. "Okay...Endy," she added, hesitantly. He gave a big smile and quickly gave her a reassuring hug. "Sere, it's alright if you call me that. Honestly. And, about my parents? They don't think of you as a ninny. They actually think that you're smart to have a brain of your own. Not like the others..." His voice trailed off, and his arms unconsciously tightened around her. (AN: Okay, how many of us have heard this line before? ::The one single person who is probably going to read this, MM, raises her hand.:: ^ ^;; Yeah...that's great... ) <> Serenity thought jealously. <> She cleared her throat and shyly uttered, "What others, Endy?" Endymion looked down at the angel in his arms, and reality came crashing upon him. What was he doing? He could never...never... <> His inner voice chided. <> Nonetheless, he quickly unraveled his arms around her waist, nearly dropping her, for she had been leaning against him. Because she had not anticipated this, she fell forward, and they both dropped down onto the ground, Endymion on the bottom, and Serenity lying on top of him. Time stood still as the two royal heirs to their respective thrones lay on the grass, neither knowing quite what to say. Serenity began the pick herself up, allowing Endymion, though she did not know it, to feel every inch of her body, for she was only wearing a thin blue dress, and he a tuxedo. He groaned, and quickly snaked his arms around her waist, making her fall on top of him again. "Endy?" she questioned her sharp blue eyes boring into his. He could feel his resolve crumbling (AN: And something else hardening...J/k! J/k! I know that's a perverted joke, but...it was just so easy to make! Forgive me.) He craned his neck up to close the space, and Serenity gave an almost inaudible gasp. <> That was her last coherent thought, before Endymion gently placed his lips on her, creating a simple, but whirlwinded (AN: I *know* that that's not a word, but can you blame me? All the other words, like 'earth-shattering' and whatever have all been used! I needed something new.) kiss. Slowly, but surely, something light and feathery grew into something more passionate, and who knows how far they would've gone, but two new voices stopped them. "Serenity! Serenity, where are you?" Ilene and Molly had begun to worry about her, when they realized that she had not yet returned to the castle. "Serenity!" The shrill cry startled Endymion and Serenity, and they immediately broke off the kiss, each panting for breath. Their eyes met, and each blushed when they realized the compromising position they were in. Serenity was now on the bottom. Her petite frame would have been crushed, had Endymion not supported himself with his arms, which were on either side of her head, and his legs on each side of her body. Their chests were still rapidly rising and falling, each remembering the kiss they had just shared. "Serenity?" Endymion looked down at Serenity, whose hair was in disarray, and cheeks flushed with color. He bent his head down and gave her another quick kiss. She looked up at him in complete adoration. "Oh, Endy..." He flashed her a quick grin. "Come on, Sere. We have to get up." Regretfully, he stood up, careful not to step on her. He offered his hand to her, and she took it, shyly pulling herself up. "Endymion..." she trailed off. "Yes, Serenity?" She hesitantly looked into his eyes, which were full of affection. "You know that we're going to have to talk about this, right?" He encircled his arms around her waist again. "Of course," he whispered into her ear. He left a trail of kisses from her ear to her mouth, stopping at the latter. He gazed into her eyes and then kissed her, passionately, on her lips again, and that was how Molly and Ilene found them. ****Serenity's Room**** "Mistress," Molly jokingly asked, "Exactly what *was* going out in the gardens?" Serenity blushed. "Molly, I do believe that it's none of your business." Serenity looked dreamily up into space. "However, I will let you know that," she confided, "Endymion is the most handsome man I have ever met!" Molly smiled. "Yes, he is wonderful, isn't he?" Serenity nodded her head. "He's always been like that. All the ladies go for him, and it's no wonder why he can't resist a pretty face-" Molly abruptly stopped, when she heard Serenity gasp. Molly instantly knew that she had said the wrong thing. "Endymion..." Serenity stopped, but continued. "Endymion has lots of women chasing after him? <>, she thought. <>" Molly opened her mouth to protest, but Serenity interrupted. "Don't lie to me, Molly. Does he have women chasing him *all* the time?" Molly looked down and gave a small nod. "Oh." Serenity turned around, facing the wall. "Then how do I stand a chance?" she whispered. Molly's eyes became huge. "Mistress, you can't surely think that he wouldn't choose you! I have never seen him look at *any* women like the way he looks at you. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that he lov-" "Molly," Serenity interjected, "I'd like to be alone for a while, so if you don't mind..." She trailed off, hoping that her servant would understand. "Mistress, if you would just list-" "Molly," Serenity commanded, her voice sharp, "that is an order." Molly silently gasped. Serenity had never treated her that way before. <> Molly nodded her head. "Yes, Mistress." She bowed her head and turned to walk out the door. Molly turned her head again. "Mistre..." She trailed off. Serenity was on the bed, crying. Molly shook her head and walked out the door... About 10 minutes later, someone softly rapped at the door. Serenity raised her head, and yelled, her voice full of anguish, "Go *away! * I told you, Molly, I don't want to see you." She lay back onto the bed, exhausted. The crying had worn her out. Serenity heard the door opening and cried out, exasperated, "Molly, *go* away!" "I'm not Molly," a masculine voice calmly stated, "And I won't... Not until I get some answers." Serenity's eyes flew open with instant awareness. There, in her doorway, stood Endymion. She quickly brought her hand up to wipe the remaining tears. <> "Endymion," she said, bravely putting on a smile, "I must tell you. I am quite tired, so if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to go to bed." She faked a yawn to show him. "Serenity, stop it." Endymion crossed the room, with long, sure strides, and calmly sat on the edge of her bed. "Serenity," he said, his voice gentle, "What's wrong?" Serenity gave a bright smile. "What on *earth* are you talking about Endy?" Endymion internally grimaced. <> "What I'm talking about, Sere, is why Molly came to me in great distress," he watched as she shut her eyes, "and told me that you were crying. Over me, nonetheless," he added, in disbelief. But wasn't she here? Crying? <> "Well," he prodded, for she wasn't saying anything. "I'm waiting." Serenity scrunched her nose, something she often did when feeling cornered. Endymion gave a tiny grin. <> "I...um...I..." "It isn't polite for a lady to stutter." The fire returned to her eyes. "Oh, shut up, Endy. I'm trying to tell you something, and there you go, trying to make me-" "Don't change the subject, Sere." She mentally cursed. <> "Oh, all right," she said, feeling riled, "I'll tell you. I just found out from Molly that you have a bunch of other women chasing after you." Tears started to form again in her eyes. She was now feeling angry. Anger at him, for being so perfect, and anger at herself for falling for him. "How," she cried aloud, "Am I supposed to compete with all the others? I can't even protect myself from my own plotting family! I have no friends, except for Molly and Ilene, but both serve me. What kind of friendship is that? All these other women have social circles, friends that they may depend on. They have you, Endy. I don't even know that much about you! Surely, I can'-" Her oration was cut off by a pair of warm lips. The kiss, as soon as it had come, was broken off, as Endymion looked into her eyes and whispered something so softly, that Serenity had to strain to hear. "I love you, Sere." Serenity looked at him, her hand flying up to her mouth. "Endy," she breathed, "please say it again...I want to make sure that I heard you correctly." He nodded. "Anything for you, Princess." Again, he chanted, "I love you, Sere. I love you, I love you, I love you." It was like a declaration. A declaration of love. "Oh, Endy," Serenity whispered, "Do you really mean it?" Endymion nodded his head. "Of course, Sere...I would never lie to you." Serenity's eyes filled with tears. She pulled her hands out of his and stubbornly declared, "Good. I'm glad for you." Endymion's eyes filled with puzzlement. (AN: I know that I'm taking this line from someone else's story. Not word for word, though. I can't remember who, but...whomever it is, don't get mad. Remember, imitation is the best form of flattery! ^^;;) <> Endymion began to speak, but was cut off by a finger being placed in front of his lips. Serenity impishly smiled. "Like I was saying, I'm glad for you...because... I happen to love you too." Endymion's eyes grew wide. "You little tease," he said, feeling as though his heart would burst from happiness. On a more serious note, he added, "You're quite sure, aren't you?" Serenity gave a silvery laugh. "Of course I'm sure, silly!" She leaned towards him and whispered into his ear in a confidential matter, " I always follow what my heart tells me to." Endymion cupped her chin and looked into her eyes. "Serenity, I know that Molly told you that I had women chasing after me." Serenity blushed and looked away, but Endymion's strong hand gently forced her to look into his eyes. "Sere, none of those other women have *ever* mattered to me. In fact, I've never felt *anything* for any of them...Only for you, Sere. Only for you." Serenity blushed. "I'm sorry, Endymion...It's just that...I can't compete with them for you!" She blurted out, in a passionate cry. "They have anything you could ever want. Beauty and wealth and-" "Sere," Endymion said in an undertone, "you don't think that you're beautiful?" Serenity shook her head. "Serenity," Endymion said, in the most sincere voice he could muster, "How could you think that?" He looked at her from head to toe, making her blush furiously. "You are," he confided to her, "the most beautiful person that I have ever laid eyes on. And you do have wealth...Remember? You're the Princess of England, for god's sake! But, money doesn't matter to me. I'd marry you in an instant if you were dirt poor. And besides, you have one thing that all those other women don't." "Really? And what might that be?" "My love," Endymion seriously replied. Serenity gasped. "Endymion," she said shakily, "are you saying what I hope you're saying?" He nodded his head and got down on his knees. "Sere, will you marry me?" Serenity's eyes filled with tears. She vaulted herself into his awaiting arms. "Oh, Endy," she said, her voice wavering, "You can't believe how happy you've just made me!" Endymion shook his head. "Actually, Sere, I know exactly how you feel. I have you, and that's what matters." He pulled back a bit and gazed into her eyes. "I love you, Sere" he again declared. "Silly," Serenity said. "I know that." She boldly put her hand on the nape of his neck and pulled him to her for a long, passionate kiss... ****The Next Morning**** Endymion was the first one to wake the next morning. As he did, his eyes opened to greet him with the most beautiful sight. Serenity lay beside him, her blond hair tumbled about her shoulders, back turned to him. His arms were wrapped around her slender waist, as he gently pulled her closer to him. Her eyes were shut, dark eyelashes framing them. Her chest was rising and falling in a steady measure, and if he listened hard enough, he could make out her heartbeat. He gave a tiny grin, and gently kissed Serenity on the top of her head. Last night had been wonderful for the both of them. Though they had both been inexperienced, they had made the most of it, not falling asleep until the way past dawn. (AN: MM, just for you!) Endymion gave a small grin, and kissed her forehead again. Serenity's eyes began to open, and she stretched her arms over head, like a cat just rising from a nap. Endymion lay still, waiting for the beautiful goddess to fully wake. She opened her eyes and blinked a few times, trying to fully absorb her current situation. <> She thought for a while, and when she finally realized what had happened, she suddenly pulled her arms down, blushing. Serenity turned around and there he was, watching her, his eyes full of contentment. "Good morning, Sere," Endymion said huskily. "'Morning, Endy," Serenity replied, while rubbing her eyes. Endymion gently took her hands from her eyes and gave each of them a kiss. Serenity smiled, and gently whispered into his ears, "Let's go brush our teeth, first. Then we can get back into bed and...*rest* some more," she said, putting some force on the word rest. (AN: You see, I've always wondered...In all the fanfics I've read, why is it that as soon as they wake up, they kiss on the mouth? Wouldn't that be...yucky? Morning breath! Ugh. That's why I put that in!) She gave him another smile and jumped out of bed, not remembering that she had no clothes on. She waited for Endymion to follow, and realized that he hadn't. She turned, and noticed the appreciating gaze that he gave her...or rather, to her body. Serenity looked at him strangely and questioned, "What?" She followed his gaze and glanced down. "Oh my god!" She shrieked. Endymion gave a chuckle. Nevermind the fact that they had just made love <> he thought, a few hours before. She ran to her closet and pulled out her nightgown, and tied it securely around her waist. "Endymion," she teasingly said, "You're horrible. You didn't even tell me that I was...*indecent*. Endymion, too, sat up and rose off the bed, enjoying watching Serenity's face color. She turned the other way to let him put on his undergarments, but he did no such thing. Instead, he walked up to Serenity, who was blushing quite furiously when she noticed his garments <> she thought. "Serenity," he seductively whispered into her ear, "wouldn't you rather get back *onto* the bed," he said, hinting to what he would like to actually *do* on the bed. Serenity let loose a silver giggle. "Oh, Endy," she said, turning herself around to face him while pressing her body to his at the same time, "I'd love to," she watched his face light up, "but..." she quickly ran out of his grasp and into the bathroom, "I really must freshen up first. Then, we can...*rest.* Endymion let out a loose growl. "Minx," (AN: Tell me, people. How original is that?) he muttered and followed her to the bathroom. Serenity walked into the spacious bathroom and looked around. She first stood next to the 'sink' and grabbed a toothbrush. She took the brush and dipped it into the bowl of water (AN: Remember, this is set *way* back then...You know, in the 1800's or something...). Grabbing the scented herbs, she crushed them until some of the juice came out. She let the juice drip onto her toothbrush, and then hurriedly started to brush her teeth. She was concentrating very hard, mind you, on brushing her teeth. So deep in concentration was she that she had long forgotten Endymion, who was watching her, while sitting on a stool they had placed in the corner of the room. He decided to join her. He stood up and walked behind her, him arms encircling her waist. She gave a little gasp and looked up into loving eyes. She gave a little sigh, but continued to brush her teeth. Endymion grinned. <> He pushed the robe off her shoulder, so that one creamy shoulder was bared, and began to place little butterfly kisses up and down her neck. Serenity felt shivers go down her spine, and quickly finished brushing her teeth. When she bent over to spit out her toothpaste, Endymion quickly tugged at the loose sash, and the robe cascaded to the floor. Serenity stood straight back up, the toothpaste already spit out, and colored when she saw the two of them in the mirror. "Endymion," she playfully chided, "That wasn't very nice of you." She knelt down to pick up her robe, but was stopped by a gentle hand on her shoulder. She stood back up, and looked questioning into his eyes. Endymion responded by laying a single butterfly kiss on her lips. He again kissed her, but this time it was with more passion. Serenity closed her eyes, and pushed her body to his, understanding what he wanted. She broke off the kiss and led him back into the bedroom. Needless to say, it was quite a while before they went downstairs for lunch... ****In the Dining Room (Around Lunchtime)**** "Isabella," Phileppe questioned, "Why isn't Endymion down to eat yet?" The Queen of Spain shot her husband a look. "Well, dear," she said sarcastically, "Let's review the facts. Neither Serenity or Endymion has come down yet...*Whatever*," she questioned sardonically, "do you *think* they *could* be doing?" Phileppe started to ponder. After a few good minutes, he replied, "Well, I don't know. What?" The Queen rolled her eyes. "You are honestly such a dolt for a husband, Phileppe. How *you* were able to claim the throne is absolutely beyond me," she said in a huff. The King sat and absorbed this information. "Well?" he questioned. "Well, what?" "Well, what the *hell* are they doing," he roared. "Hello," chimed a sweet voice. "Sorry we're late. We were caught up in...other affairs," Serenity interjected, not wanting to cause a fight. The King and Queen stood up as Endymion, whose arm was wrapped around Serenity's waist, and Serenity walked into the room. "Hello, dears," the Queen said sweetly, all her former agitation towards her 'beloved' gone. <> the Queen thought. <> The Kings greeting, however, was a little more...demanding. "Where have you two been the whole morning?" he roared. Serenity and Endymion quickly looked at each other, trying to think of an excuse, for they were both sure that each was supposed to have upheld the 'chastity' rule until they were on their marriage bed. "Well, Father, we...uh.." Endymion threw a desperate look at Serenity. "Sir," Serenity calmly said, "We were merely outside in the rose garden, admiring the beauty of your flowers." Endymion and the Queen sweatdropped. <> That thought was running through the Queen and Prince at that moment. The King blinked. "Oh," was all he said, before walking out of the room. Suddenly, he turned on his heel and walked back into the room. Serenity visibly swayed as he marched purposely towards her. "Yes, sir?" she squeaked "Serenity, just make sure that you aren't...looking at the flowers again anytime soon, okay? That goes for you too, Endymion." They both blushed. The King had known that it was a lie. "Yes, sir," they replied in union. "Good. Now, wife," he jokingly said, "Let's go eat, shall we?" The Queen took his offered arm as they left the room. On the way out, though this was not heard by neither Serenity nor Endymion, the Queen whispered into the King's ear, "How did you know?" The King shot her a sly glance and replied, "I was in the gardens this morning, and I didn't see either of them there. And besides...I noticed a glow surrounding both Endymion and Serenity when they came downstairs. *Together.*" He sighed. "I remember the day when we came down those exact steps, and my parents were wondering the same exact thing." At this point, he chuckled. "Except, I don't think that they ever did figure out what we did!" They both burst out in gales of laughter. "Oh, Phileppe, (AN: MM, this name is....ugh!)" the Queen said, in-between laughs, "However did I manage to catch you?" The King stopped laughing. "Why, my dear," he charmingly said, "it's all due to your charisma! Once our eyes met from across the ballroom, I knew that it was meant to be..." ****Back in the Dining Room**** As Endymion and Serenity were left standing in shock in the dining room, Molly and Ilene walked in. "Majesties," Ilene politely inquired, "Would you like to go to town today?" Endymion and Serenity looked at each other. "Anything you'd like to do, Serenity?" Endymion said, raising an eyebrow. "Actually, yes, Endy. I'd like to buy a new gown." Endymion let out a chuckle. "As if you didn't have enough time to do that already, Sere," he said teasingly. She swatted him on the chest. "Endy..." He grabbed her hand and brought it up to his lips. "I love you," he whispered. Serenity blushed and looked at the ground, but her face was immediately cupped by Endymion's hand. He gazed into abysmal blue eyes, filled with love and adoration. "I love you too, Endy," she said in an undertone. He bent his dark head over her fair one and kissed her gently on the lips. Serenity looked surprised, but closed her eyes, throwing herself into the kiss. Molly and Ilene looked amused and began to applaud. Startled, Endymion quickly pulled back, and Serenity lost her balance, for she had been leaning on him. Down they both went, in a flurry of tailcoats and petticoats, falling onto the floor. Endymion again landed at the bottom, and Serenity at the top. They looked at each other and began to laugh. Lightly at first, but soon Endymion's deep chuckles and Serenity's silver laugh was heard throughout the palace. Molly and Ilene glanced at each other and sweatdropped. ( ^ ^;; ^ ^;;) No one but Serenity and Endymion knew why they were laughing. It was a repeat of the event, which had taken place in the garden! The door was flung open and the King and Queen burst in, each wondering what on *earth* was going on. Molly and Ilene quickly stood up straight, and respectfully nodded their heads, dropping their eyes. The King and Queen were not paying attention to them, however. They were more interested in the couple that was lying on top of each other in the middle of the room, laughter spilling from each of their mouths. "What on earth is going on?" Isabella questioned. Endymion and Serenity immediately stopped laughing and were back on their feet. "Um..." was all that they could both manage. "Um?" the Queen inquired. "Um, what?" "We..." Endymion and Serenity glanced at each other again and burst out laughing. The King, whose patience was running out, began to fume. "The Queen of Spain has just asked you a question. You must answer her immediately." "Oh, Father, stop being such a fuss. We were only laughing, and now the matter has gone by. Does it really matter *why* we were laughing? The point is," Endymion stated seriously, as he took Serenity's hand into his own, "that we're happy." Isabella glanced at Phileppe. (AN: MM, AAGGGHHH! I *still* hate this name!) "We-ell," the Queen said, "That's good Endymion. *Real* good excuse." Endymion beamed. "However," the Queen continued, her voice rising, "that does *not* explain why the rest of the staff could hear you two laughing. What in the world got you so riled up?" Serenity looked at Endymion, her eyes pleading. <> <> "Mother, we were laughing because Molly," Here, Molly shot daggers at him, "told a most amusing joke. Why don't you *tell* them, Molly?" "Yes," Serenity added, "Do tell them." Molly shot both of them a look filled with vehemence before turning to the King and Queen. <> she thought. "Um...well...the joke that I told them was..." The King and Queen looked at her expectantly. <> "The joke was...I have a monkey, his name is Jojo, and he likes to...to... <>...to...dance around naked," she finished triumphantly. (AN: MM, RR...What more needs to be said?) Blank stares were all she received from, not only the King and the Queen, but also from everyone else in the room. She shrugged her shoulders as her defense. "Well," she sniffed, " *I* thought that it was funny." Blank stares. "Honestly, I did." Blank stares. "Stop it!" she roared. The King and Queen blinked. Once. Twice. Again. "Well, Molly, dear," the Queen said smoothly, "That was...different. I can see why Serenity and Endymion got so worked up about that joke." The Queen then briskly put the matter aside. "So," she said, "What are your plans for today?" Serenity jumped in before Endymion could answer. "We're going to town today," she girlishly squealed, "to look for some new gowns!" The King walked across the room to stand next to Endymion and whispered, "Are you *sure* that you want to do that? You know how long girls take to shop. And your *mother* on the other hand...Don't even *try* to get me started." The Queen had heard that comment and walked across the room to join her husband. She smacked him on the chest, and none too lightly. "OW!" She gave him a smug little smile. "Baby." Serenity cleared her throat. "Anyway...we are going to leave in about 5 minutes. Would you care to come?" The King and Queen gave each other a sidelong glance. "Um," the Queen said, "No, thank you. We're just going to stay home and relax today, but thank you anyway, Serenity. Have fun shopping, dear." Isabella and Phileppe started for the door, but just as they were about to exit, Isabella stopped and turned around. "Oh, and by the way, you two," she said, an impish smile, that was not unusual, forming on her lips, "you might want to change." She glanced at the two. "I don't believe," she said, while walking out the door, "that robes are appropriate for going out to town with. Blushing, Endymion and Serenity looked down, and indeed, they were still dressed in their robes. They looked at each other and shared the same thought. << Go get dressed! >> They sped up the stairs, leaving Molly and Ilene behind, watching the rising fuzzies settle back onto the floor. ****In Town**** Serenity tentatively placed one foot out of the carriage, a hand placed in Endymion's for support in case she should fall. She ducked her head out of the carriage and gasped. Town was so busy! She had never seen anything like it. Endymion raised an eyebrow. "What is it, Sere?" Serenity gave a giggle. "It's just that...well..." She was now in discomfort, not wanting to tell Endy about how Beryl had never let her go out of the palace walls. << I don't want him to think that->> All doubts flew out of her mind as Endymion wrapped his arms around her slender waist. "What is it, Sere?" he said, his voice livid. Serenity blushed. "Um, well, Endy..." "Yes," he said, voice querying. "Back in England, Endy," Serenity slowly started, "my aunt never...sheneverletmeoutofthepalace." "What?" Endymion's voice was full of trepidation. "You must be kidding, Sere. Rumor says that London has *the* best shops to go to! How could she not let you? How did you get all of your gowns?" "Well, Endy, Beryl would have the tailors come in and fit me in the castle." She sighed. "Endy, for goodness sake! You're supposed to be one of the smartest men in Spain! Use your brain!" Endymion snorted. "Excuse me, but I *am* the smartest man in Spain," he said, his voice full of humor. Serenity rolled her eyes. "Whatever you say, Endymion. I'm sure, though, that *I* could beat you in any type of skill. Whether it be mental or physical." Endymion pulled her close so only she could hear the remark he was about to make. "Are you sure about that, Sere?" he questioned. "I seem to remember that last night, I had more energy to spend than you did." He chuckled when a blush came to her face. Molly and Ilene (AN: Remember them? They're here, too!) looked on, puzzled as to what the prince could have whispered into their princess' ear to make her blush so rapidly. "Well, Endymion," Serenity quickly retorted, wanting to wipe that smug smile off his face, "*You* weren't the one that had to put up with someone driving in-between their legs the *whole* *damn* night!" (AN: Okay, that remark was made for humor, not hentai. *Please* don't take it personally!) Endymion pretended to gasp. "My lady, what words has just come out of your fair mouth?" He raised a hand to his head. "For God's sake, Sere! You're supposed to be a lady! What do you think Ilene would say if she heard a curse from *you!*" "I think that she'd cheer me on for shutting up an egotistical jerk like you!" "Yes," Endymion said, "But I'm a *cute* egotistical jerk. And you're just the person that is going to have to put up with me!" Serenity gasped. (AN: It's a repeat of him asking her to marry him. My editor, MM, said that the proposal was unclear before, so I'm writing it in again, and this time, he has a ring!) Endymion got down onto one knee and looked up at Serenity, her azure eyes rimmed with tears. "Sere, darling...I know that I've only known you for a short time, but...will you marry me? Will you give me the pleasure of falling asleep with you every night, and waking up with you every morning? The pleasure of knowing that," he said, slipping the diamond ring onto her finger, "I'll always have the fact that you'll love me, no matter what? Forever and for always?" Serenity closed her eyes, tears spilling out and her mouth in a straight line. She slowly opened her eyes, letting Endymion see them. "Endy," she said, "You already asked me that last night...but you did put it a little more eloquently this time, and you actually have a ring! Endymion, if you trust my love for you as I do yours, you will already know my answer." Endymion stood up and gave her a wonderful smile. He pulled her close, his arms going around her body, crushing her to him, as Molly and Ilene watched, their eyes full of tears. One thought rushed through both of their minds. <> "Oh, Sere," Endymion whispered into her ear, "I love you. I'll love you forever." "Forever, Endy?" Serenity teasingly questioned, her voice still choked. "Isn't that an awful long time?" Endymion stroked her head. "Not when our love is concerned," he seriously replied. He pushed her head back and looked into her eyes. "I love you," he whispered again. Serenity smiled. "I love you too, Endy," was her simple reply. (AN: Anyone queasy yet?) A lady in the shadows watched this whole event, her eyes filled with malice, directed towards the young Princess. (AN: Who wants to guess who she is?) Her hand clutched on the object that she had hidden, in the folds of her robe. She stealthily picked it up, and suddenly began to walk, swiftly but surely, towards the Prince and Princess. She smiled. <> was her thought, as she neared the Princess. No one saw her approach, and no one saw her dagger raised above her head. That was her mistake. The sun shone high above, and it glinted off of the knife, catching the attention of two persons; Endymion and Ilene. The old woman quickly darted through the crowd, ready to plunge the knife into the unsuspecting Serenity. Endymion and Ilene gasped in horror, and watched as the knife came closer, and closer...Thud. A body lay on the ground. "Oh my god," both Endymion and Ilene cried. "No!" In his vengeful cry, Endymion grabbed the old woman, who could only smile fiercely, her eyes glazed over in her joy of killing. An obsession you could call it. She loved and lived to do it. Molly lay on the ground, the knife plunged into her heart, the blood already starting to spread around her, pooling into her hair, her face drawn. Serenity looked down in horror. "Molly?" she whispered. "Oh, Molly, how could you?" Endymion hit the old woman firmly in the jaw, knocking her out...or so they thought. Serenity, Endymion, and Ilene kneeled around Molly, their backs hunched over in grief. "Mistress," was the only word that her lips would form. Serenity took Molly's pale hand and brought it to her face, letting Molly's palm touch her cool skin, a sign of respect. Molly tried to pull her hand away. Royalty was *not* allowed to do that. Only the lowly were to do so. Serenity held onto her hand, as Endymion gently did the same. Molly felt tears come to her eyes. She started to speak when her eyes suddenly opened in horror. The forgotten old woman had pulled another knife out of her robe, and was about to plunge it into Serenity's unprotected back. Thud. The sound of another body hitting the ground. Serenity's eyes opened in fear as she lay on the ground, her head hurting...The loss of life was near, she knew. There, beside her lay Ilene...She too had protected her Princess, her daughter in some way. Serenity's mouth formed an 'O' and an anguished scream made its way from her mouth. "Noooooo! Ilene! Not you...PLEASE, GOD, not you, too!" She threw herself onto Ilene's body. Endymion glared coldly at the killer. He took the knife he had in his belt, and, with no remorse, stabbed it into the old lady's chest, watching her eyes simply close, and her body flutter to the ground. She hadn't even made a sound. Endymion felt her neck. No pulse. He sighed. <> He turned to look at Serenity, who was sobbing in her grief. "The two of you," she whispered. "My only friends in the world, and you sacrificed your lives for me." Tears made their way down her skin, slightly flushed from her crying. "Ilene, Molly, how could you?" The two servants turned and looked at each other, a silent communication between them. Molly painfully gasped out, "Mistress, it is our duty to protect you..." Molly took in another breath, but before she could speak, her body shuddered and stilled. Serenity didn't even move. Her lips barely formed the word. "Molly?" Realization sunk in. Her friend, her best friend, had died. "Molly?" Her voice was hysterical. "Molly! Molly, no! Molly, come back to me! Molly..." Endymion wrapped his arms around her."Sere, it'll be alrig-" "No," Serenity stated, her eyes panicking. "Don't you *dare* tell me that it will be alright, Endymion." She gestured towards the two bodies, one was still breathing, barely, and the other still. "*Look* at them, Endymion. Look at them and then look into my eyes. Can you truthfully tell me that everything will be all right?" Serenity had gone into hysterics. She frantically threw herself onto Ilene again, and began to sob. Ilene gently placed a soothing hand onto Serenity's head, and began to stroke her hair, desperate to make her Princess stop crying. Ilene's lips began to painfully move, but she strived to make the words form. "Come by the fire And tell me a story Tell... me a story Before the... day's gone. Spin me a fancy Of ...dwarves in a mountain Sing me a ballad Of treasures... they won. Pl-play me some music A fantasy folk song Step to its rhythm And d-d-dance me a tale." Serenity's eyes began to water. This poem...A poem that they had shared for so long, ever since she was young. It truly was *their* poem, and now Ilene, who was barely breathing, was dauntlessly struggling to finish it. "Hum me a tune of A wa...rm little village A cozy small town tucked Away... in a vale. Read me a poem Of caring and friendship Tell... of... the.. ocean And how it endures. Whisper in secret A mystery ancient L-l-let me sit near you While happin-ess pours. Her voice was starting to fade. Her breath became shallow, but she valiantly struggled to say the last few lines of the poem. Tell me... no stories Of promises broken Read me no... verses Of... things that won't keep J-j-just tell me a story Of things everlasting Th-th-then tuck me... in tightly And... safe I shall... sleep.*" Ilene's eyes closed, but she managed to whisper her last words to Serenity. "Princess, you were always like a daughter to me..." Her head lolled to one side, and the grip she had on Serenity's hand loosened. Serenity's eyes, which were filled tears, shut. Endymion could do nothing but offer her his protection, encircling his arms around her in a protective shield, as 5 people, each devastated in their some way, lay in the street. ****Epilogue**** Serenity and Endymion lay on their marriage bed, each in pensive thought. "Endymion," Serenity said, breaking the silence, "I miss them." Endymion sighed. "Sere, we've been over this...They are still here, just not in physical form...Why, I bet that they can even see us now." Serenity gasped and reached for the blankets, covering them over both their naked forms. Endymion chuckled and sat up onto his side, so he could see her face. "Sere, you know what I mean." Serenity gave him a smile of reassurance. "I know, Endy...It's just that...I mean..." She trailed off and Endymion gave her a smile. <> she thought. <> They were married now, the adjoined rulers of England, and they would take the throne of Spain after Endymion's father died. After that horrible incident in the street, Serenity, along with Endymion, his parents, and their royal guard, came back to England, so Serenity could rightfully take the throne. Serenity gave a laugh as she remembered the look on Beryl's face when she saw them come into the castle. Her face had twisted from smiling to a look of dismay (and disdain) as Serenity walked in. "But...but...how?" Was all that Beryl had managed to shriek, before the guards had taken her down to the dungeon. A week later, after the trial, she had been executed, but not before asking forgiveness from Serenity. Serenity readily gave it, but deep inside, she knew that Beryl wasn't truly sorry. She was brought out of her reverie by Endymion, who had settled himself quite comfortably over her. "Endy," Serenity groaned, "Can't we *please* take a break? I'm awfully tired..." She let her words trail off as Endymion brought his lips onto hers. "Sere," he said, in between kisses, "you're so silly. I get tired too, ya know...Though I think that I could stay in your embrace forever..." He grinned roguishly when she ducked her head and blushed. "Seriously, though, Sere...They died because they loved you, and because it was their duty. You should be happy because they loved you enough to put your life in front of theirs. Molly and Ilene both knew that you still had a future in front of you...One that contains me in it and the rest of our lives. So be happy, Sere...We'll face eternity together. Just you and me, and if the world comes crashing down upon us tomorrow, we'll still know that we love each other." Serenity gave a sigh of pure bliss. "Endy," she murmured, "I don't know what I would do with you. You're the pillar of strength that I can lean upon...And I thank you for that." Endymion grinned. "Trust me, Sere...I know exactly what you mean." "Endy, we'll always be together, won't we?" Serenity asked shyly. "Forever, a day after," was his reply. Serenity let out a breath of air. "I love you." "I love you too, Sere. *Never* doubt my love for you, for the day I stop loving you is never going to come." Serenity smiled and gently craned her neck up for another kiss, and Endymion full-heartedly responded. She sank her head back down onto the pillow and let Endymion kiss her, over and over. <> Serenity felt like declaring her love again one last time, before she let her passion take over. "I love you, Endy." "Sere, I'll always love you. Forever and for a day after." Fin 'To Protect a Princess' AN: Hello, there! Are we still reading this? Good job! You've finished a 31 page long story that took me at *least* 3 weeks to write! Oh, and the poem that was up there? It was written by Anne Moffata ( I think that that's how you spell her last name!) Okay, thanks goes out to my ever-so-patient best friend and editor, Mandy, who has stuck by me since day one of this story. Hey, Mandy? Um...tell your mom I'm sorry for calling you so many times, okay? Another acknowledgement goes out to; Eternal Angel, for going over this and for sending it to ASMR. (THANK YOU, USA! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!) CookieDo99 (Hey, I *still* don't know your first name!), who has been *so* much fun to talk to, and I hope that we will continue to talk! Oh, and for you 'Romancing in NY' fans...Like I wrote before, it *will* be finished. I just don't know when. In fact, I don't even know if I will continue to write fanfiction. (Unless, people actually *e-mail* me and tell me to continue to write!) It really is stressful, and I've only written 3 stories! ^ ^;; I don't know *how* Alicia, Stormlight, and Eternal Angel manage to do it! Anyway, thanks again to all the said people, and I hope you enjoyed my story! Love, Lelu
